In this world, vampires are citizens, they have legal rights, jobs, husbands and wives, occasionally children (if they don't contract Vlad syndrome that is) and lycanthropes are normal people like you and me, they work at our hospitals and teach our children, under cover and secretive, afraid to be found out in case they are shunned by the bigots of society who insist they are dangerous.
This is the world of Anita Blake, and she is a legal Vampire Executioner for the state of St Louis, hired to kill any immortal who dares to step out of the boundary of the law.
She can also raise the dead. She is an animator, hired by Animators Inc to raise corpses, often for legal cases, for example, what if your court case relies on a witness who's just died of a heart attack? Then you call Anita Blake! She'll raise them and you can question the zombie till you're content. Simple as.
But there are others in this world, people like Edward, hired assassins who have bored of killing humans and have moved onto to bigger, better, more challenging jobs, like killing lycanthropes for money.
There are bars run by vampires who feed off sex, lycanthrope strip clubs and BDSM clubs litter the world as people adapt to the shocking revelation that immortals are amongst us...
